Hi, I’m Deniz (no pronouns), a married gay man, web developer, LGBTI+ volunteer and social project developer.

Throughout my life, I have faced many difficulties and disadvantages due to being queer. Nevertheless, I tried to develop and improve as much as I could. Acceptance of my sexual orientation was a difficult process. In fact, my gender identity was very clear from the fact that I wore my mother’s clothes and makeup during my childhood. But like almost all of us, it was very difficult to be accepted by the environment.
I tried to understand the reasons for this based on my own family. As Nietzsche said, the why would endure the how. My curiosity to understand this was the difficulties I experienced. At first, I researched norms and sociology on gender identity and sexual orientation, but then I became interested in behavioral sciences and stress reduction. I realized that the reason for the homophobic or transphobic perspective was not asking the question “why” enough. Of course, in order to find the answer to this why question, it was necessary to know some basic information. Someone’s self-questioning behavior was an important criterion for them to accept us, if not to embrace us. And through behavioral sciences, it was sometimes possible to observe a slight change when self-awareness-based issues such as norms and decision-making behaviors were explained to the environment or family. Even if it was small, it was hopeful.
My wish is for them to like us or at least accept us.
Yes, I am a software developer. But being a queer person has invited me into the fields of sociology and psychology a lot. Now my dream is to study psychology and help LGBTI+ individuals.
With Love,
Özgür Deniz Pınar
