The new draft law, which has been occupying the agenda in Turkey in recent days, seems to make the lives of LGBTI+ individuals even more difficult. The draft law envisages 3 years in prison for those who encourage LGBTI+ and 4 years in prison for those who perform same-sex weddings. However, the use of a vague concept like “encouragement” means that anyone can be a potential target. A drag queen’s appearance on stage, making a post supporting LGBTI+ on social media, or making an LGBTI+ themed movie, writing a book, maybe even academic studies can be considered as “incitement”. This situation severely restricts freedom of expression and forces us to live in more anxiety.
It is already difficult for an LGBTI+ individual to live in Turkey. While violence, hatred and anger are constantly increasing, it seems that there will be no space to breathe with the adoption of these laws. It is damaging to our lives that we are not targeted just because of who you are. Being accused, especially for social media posts or activities, can be a nightmare.
This draft law is a serious violation of human rights. Many articles of the European Convention on Human Rights are violated. Love and freedom of expression are fundamental rights and restricting them undermines human dignity.
